It’s truly wild (and a little bit unbelievable tbh) that it’s already August, but what a year it’s been so far! The games of 2022 have been some of the best in recent years, from the frenzy of Elden Ring to the comeback of Nintendo Switch Sports and the ooky spooky interactive drama The Quarry. But believe it or not, the best is yet to come.

In the coming weeks, we’re getting open world RPGs to sink our teeth (and our time) into, sport games, family-friendly games and PS5 remasters. There’s a lot to get excited about, no matter what platform you play on.

Here are the hottest game releases in August and September that you should absolutely add to your wish list right now.

Saint Row

Somehow the reboot of the Saints Row franchise is going to be bigger, better and weirder than any game in the series so far. Releasing on August 23 for Playstation, Xbox and PC, the reboot has everything that made the original games great: an in-depth character creator, outrageous missions (who else remembers jumping into the Murderbrawl wrestling ring in Saints Row: The Third?) and weapons that defy space and time (Black Hole Launcher, anyone?).

But the reboot will also have updated graphics and a (slightly) more mature sense of humour. Don’t worry, though: Saints Row will still be a balls to the wall experience that makes GTA look like a Play School segment.

If you want to jump into the bizarre action ASAP, the Saints Row Boss Factory is a free download that lets you create your character ahead of time, share them with other players and check out other people’s characters for inspiration. Then just import your character into the full game and start playing!

Splatoon 3 (and a limited-edition Splatoon-themed Nintendo Switch OLED)

Splatoon 3 is perfect for a family game night, especially if there are kids playing. Nintendo’s latest team-based shooter isn’t like other team-based shooters you’ve played (unless you’ve played Splatoon or Splatoon 2, in which case it will be the same but better…). The aim of the game is to paint as much of the map as possible in your team’s colour. You just happen to do this with high-powered paint guns, mech-suits and grenades.

To celebrate the game’s launch on September 9, Nintendo is releasing a Splatoon Switch OLED featuring artwork inspired by the game. This limited-edition Switch OLED is available for pre-order and will be released on August 26.

The Last Of Us Part 1

The PS5 remaster of the first The Last of Us game is one of the biggest gaming releases of the entire year. The critically acclaimed game has been remade from the ground up in The Last of Us Part 2’s engine, which means this 2013 game will have 2022-worthy graphics and gameplay.

Beyond the visual improvements, the remake will also make use of the 60+ accessibility options that were included in the second game’s engine, which made the game playable for low-vision and blind players as well as players with fine-motor and hearing difficulties.

And good news for PC players: The Last of Us Part 1 will be coming to PC soon. Finally, nine years after its release, PC players and players with accessibility needs will be able to experience one of the best games ever made for the first time ever.

FIFA 23

Releasing on September 27 for PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Switch, FIFA 23 features Aussie star player and captain of the Matildas, Sam Kerr, on the cover and we couldn’t be more proud!

Long-time FIFA players can expect a multitude of improvements on the previous game – and for the first time in the series’ history, FIFA 23 will include the Women’s Super League and French Division 1 Féminine league, featuring teams like Arsenal, Lyon and Kerr’s Chelsea. It’s also using groundbreaking motion capture technology to make the gameplay look more realistic than ever.
